Donavon Frankenreiter

Pro-surfer dude Donavon Frankenreiter's move from ocean to sound waves isn't at all jarring, since his laid-back music and the philosophical thrust of his lyrics epitomize beach culture. On his third album, Pass It Around (Lost Highway), the singer/guitarist again fashions tasty grooves slathered in melodic pop and soul with side doses of folk and measured funk. The warm, late-afternoon, communal vibe is reflected in lyrics that urge organic balance in all things, threading through tunes like the title track, "Life, Love & Laughter," "Sing a Song," and "Come Together." Frankenreiter's assuring, sandy-textured, just-soulful-enough voice slides easily into the welcoming rhythms. He musters a bit more spunk to match the billowy organ and mariachi horns spicing up "Your Heart," as well as the more tenacious hooks in the flowing rock ballad "Someone's Something." Fiddler/singer Sara Watkins of the now-on-hiatus avant-bluegrass band Nickel Creek will open. She has recently completed a solo album produced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and featuring guests Jon Brion, Gillian Welch, and David Rawlings. It's projected to be released early next year. 18+.
