It's been a while since puppets have been funny for adults. Much like clowns and sparkly ponies, puppets have been relegated to the "kids-only" genre, while video games and cartoons have transcended age brackets. But despite a dearth in adult puppetry over the years there have been some brief moments of brilliance, including TV's Sifl and Ollie and the nationally touring production of Avenue Q. Puppeteer and political satirist Paul Zaloom is another prominent example, having been cited as "one of the most original and talented political satirists working in the theater" in the New York Times. The puppets in Zaloom's shows have humorously grappled with issues including discrimination based on ethnicity and sexuality, the war on terrorism, and U.S. foreign policy (imagine Miss Piggy wrapping her head around that one). Zaloom gets political again with his newest work, this time teaming up with puppeteer Lynn Jeffries for The Tiny Jumbo Jolly Grim Show. The following day Zaloom revives his Emmy award-winning show, Beakman's World, with a kid-friendly live performance. Friday's show is 18+, $15 at 8 p.m.; Saturday's show is all ages, $10 at 2 p.m.
