Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits: Culture and Creation in Manga and Anime

It's the most wonderful time of the year, for fans of anime, at least. The seventh annual Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits: Culture and Creation in Manga and Anime is set to begin. Internationally recognized, the three-day event takes a fashion show, manga and voice acting classes, portfolio showcases and reviews, a bazaar, lectures, and screenings, and wraps it up into one event. On tap are appearances and lectures from legendary anime figures ABe Yoshitoshi, creator of Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, NieA_7, and Haibane Renmei; Crispin Freeman, a voice recognizable from films such as Howl's Moving Castle, Hellsing, and Ghost in the Shell; fan favorite Marc Hairston, space and physics researcher (back for his seventh straight appearance); director of new product development at Tokyopop Inc. Jeremy Ross; and Samantha R. Sangster, a.k.a. Samantha Rei, creator of clothing company and website Blasphemina's Closet. Festivities begin Friday with the Fresh Fruits Basket Fashion Show, continue on Saturday with the first Junior Scholars Presentation, and wrap up Sunday with remaining lectures and screenings. Put your best face and cosplay ensemble together. Go to www.mcad.edu/anime for full schedule.
Fri., Sept. 26, 7 p.m.-midnight; Sat., Sept. 27, 10-midnight; Sun., Sept. 28, 10 a.m.-5:45 p.m., 2008
