Cool Chills on a Hot Summer Night: Sorry, Wrong Number; Death After Dark

"Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of men? The Shadow knows!" For more than 20 years, no cultural catchphrase was as widely known as this ominous opening line to the radio mystery series The Shadow. In the show, Lamont Cranston, always described as a "wealthy young man about town," and his sidekick and possibly more, Margot Lane, got into all sorts of trouble, and dispensed some cultural critiques along the way. Although the show lives on in recorded form, the Bloomington Art Center is offering a rare chance to see an episode ("Death Prowls at Night") of the legendary show performed live onstage. The thriller will be paired with The Hitchhiker. An adventure from another airwave sleuth program, Nick Carter will be staged on Thursdays and Saturdays. The show became widely known for using the plot device of Nick, the hero, saving Patsy, his secretary/damsel in distress, just as she is about be murdered. Rumors claim that the phrase "in the nick of time" sprouted from the show. It's not true, but the rumors are a testament to the show's popularity. These shows will also feature a performance of Sorry, Wrong Number.
Thursdays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: July 10. Continues through July 26, 2008
