Traci Tullius: Roger Roger

By Ben Palosaari

In 2006 Traci Tullius had an installation at Soap Factory that cobbled together 50 pieces of footage from years of her work. It included a gag-inducing scene of Tullius wolfing down a heaping plate of spaghetti, and one of her hosing somebody off in a yard as he kicks and brays like a donkey. Now she's returning to Soap Factory with the film installation "Roger, Roger." It's an ode to the strangeness of Oklahoma. Tullius created a six-channel, vaguely narrative video focusing on worn-out farmland and the vast nothingness of the "Sooner State." The piece features a dilapidated farmhouse, seemingly endless sky and landscape, and Tullius's father providing the soundtrack while playing guitar in a Ford dealership. The video is projected throughout the Soap Factory gallery space on six hanging screens. Oh, and it has child Elvis impersonators. Also happening at Soap Factory is the sprawling collaboration piece "Meander" with contributions from 18 Twin Cities artists using various media.
