The war years of the 1940s demanded sacrifice, dedication, and honor, not only from those serving overseas, but also from civilians on the American home front. Any World War II documentary would praise our greatest generation for rising to that formidable challenge with courage and dignity. But this A-List blurb is not a documentary, and the fact is, they were also incredibly cool. The Commemorative Air Force honors all aspects of the '40s generation with one of the biggest swing dance events of the year, held in a sizable hanger alongside vintage aircraft. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and food will be available to keep the dancers hopping to swing-era tunes, courtesy of the 20-piece Roseville Big Band. This year will also feature a performance by the Minnesota Fire Service Memorial Pipe Band, and if the past is any indication, the CAF usually fires up a real WWII bomber just to hear her throaty purr. Many dancers don period attire, which can be snapped up for a song at an army surplus store or vintage shop. They're not required, but red lipstick and men in uniform are definitely part of the fun.
