Real Women Have Curves

The St. Paul-based Teatro del Pueblo has been around since 1992, but Real Women Have Curves represents the first step in the theater's vision of stepping up from a small-scale company into the world of mid-sized companies. Josefina Lopez's play depicts Latino immigrant women and their working lives, blending comedy with drama as our heroines toil, producing petite-sized clothing a few sizes too small for their voluptuous frames (along the way dealing with the ins and outs of being an immigrant in today's America). Teatro del Pueblo looks to amplify its voice in a Minnesota with a more changing demographic than ever, and the timing looks appropriate. "We want people to come see the beauty of what's there," says company artistic director Al Justiniano, "then add to it." Sounds about right.
