Grand Old Day

Make no mistake: Grand Old Day may have an old-timey name, but there's nothing old-fashioned about this festival. In fact, it's so modern it has a MySpace page. This year is the 35th anniversary for the street festival, marked by a '70s-themed parade starting at 10 a.m. (will they march to "Disco Inferno"?). Other activities worthy of gawking at include strongman and -woman competitions, a health run/walk for adults and kids, and roving entertainment, including stilt walkers and jugglers. Live music highlights include Black Blondie, Doomtree, Vampire Hands, and Heiruspecs, among others, taking it to the streets at various Grand Avenue parking lots and beer gardens. Those who would rather spend time with the kids in lieu of a beer court can enjoy the petting zoo or take in some cultural events, including art, music, and dance featuring traditional African, Tibetan, Native American, and Irish styles. Regardless of what you do, be prepared to evacuate the premises at 5 p.m.; like the rest of St. Paul, this festival (and many businesses in the area) will close promptly at 5. Free. 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more info call 651.699.0029 or visit www.grandave.com.
Sun., June 1, 7:45 a.m.-5 p.m., 2008
