Ballet of the Dolls: Rite of Spring

Ninety-five years ago this month, Igor Stravinsky premiered his groundbreaking composition, "The Rite of Spring," in Paris. It caused a near-riot thanks to the music's modern and discordant sound, not to mention the spectacle of the Ballet Russes dancing through a pagan sacrifice, led by wild man Vaslav Nijinsky. Sounds like a great night at the theater. It's the 21st century now, and we're a little less easily shocked these days, but it's certain that the daring members of the Ballet of the Dolls, led by Myron Johnson, together with collaborators Susana di Palma/Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre and Live Action Set, will draw upon the remarkable tension, power, and sensuality in Stravinsky's score as they each take a turn re-interpreting this classic work. It's unlikely they will spark any angry crowds in northeast Minneapolis, but this is still a demanding work, full of challenging rhythms and a relentless primal energy. Kudos to all for taking up this choreographic challenge.
