Shapiro & Smith Dance: Next Step

By Linda Shapiro

Published on April 03, 2008 at 3:20am

Shapiro & Smith Dance rebounds from the death of artistic co-director Danial Shapiro in 2006 and a successful national tour of "Anytown" to music by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band with a program titled "Next Steps." Joanie Smith's new "Miniatures" is a collection of small tales of passion by a very large talent. The company also reprises "What Dark/Falling into Light," a 1996 work inspired by the Holocaust and fueled by the infinite variety of atrocities that seem to populate our planet these days. The company boasts a fabulous bunch of dancers, lyrical athletes who animate the work with their energy and charisma. Company member Maggie Bergeron will contribute a trio about love and loss called "Proof."
