Established in 1995 in St. Petersburg, Iguan Dance Theatre began as a collaboration between Nina Gasteva and Michail Ivanov in the avant-garde music nightclub Tam-Tam and grew into a troupe that has earned two nominations for the Golden Mask Award, the Russian equivalent of the Tony. Their work is based in modern dance but relies on the surreal potential of experimental theater, poetry, and pantomime as well. "Displaced Persons" recently premiered at the American Dance Festival in Durham and will be presented at the Southern Theater through a partnership with Link Vostok (East/West International Arts Exchange). The program also includes "Working Class Hero" by Oleg Soulimenko, an exploration of the artist's role in society as a white-collar worker, without the perks.
