With many people traveling home for the holidays, it might be easy to forget that many don't have homes to return to. According to a Wilder Research Center survey taken one night in late 2006 (the largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind), youth under 21 made up 47 percent of the homeless population that evening. On any given night, 7,000 individuals in the state may receive shelter while 1,000 may be turned away due to lack of space and resources. Giving insights to the homeless experience, both past and present, "I Couldn't Live at Home" features over 100 images, including work by noted photographer Wing Young Huie. Minnesota Spoken Word Association contributes oral history elements—which include narratives of past homeless youth who resided in the former Jewish Sheltering Home. Also included in the show is artwork by currently homeless and at-risk youth, as well as poetry by fourth-graders from the WISE Charter School in north Minneapolis. Yet another aspect of this multimedia collaboration is the performance series; its final event happens tonight (Thursday December 13). Beat boxer/speed rapper Carnage, Adam Levy from the Honeydogs, and Jelloslave are slated to perform live music, and Overheard Theatre will be giving a dramatic reading of Nicole Gurgel's new play, Somewhere Else Mother: True Stories of the Unexpected Homeless.
