Rosy-cheeked romantics through and through, Stars may be the most elegant-sounding of all the indie-pop bands to emerge from the seemingly bottomless Montreal scene over the past few years (take that, Arcade Fire!). Showcasing graceful production and impeccable arrangements as much as solid songwriting, their music contains an air of bourgeois melodrama that better fits the acoustics and decor of a theater than that of a rock club. After pulling the trigger on some questionable business decisions—including releasing a remixed version of their celebrated Set Yourself on Fire album more than two years after its initial release, and making the entirety of their new record In Our Bedroom After the War available for free download months before it showed up at retailers—Stars have made it through to the other side, still as poignant and resplendent a force as ever.
