In the world of the comic book Powers, detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim stalk the city streets solving crimes of the super-human, be they mutants, aliens, or evil-genius scientists. The plots are fresh and gripping (hard to do in modern superhero comics); the dialogue is hard-boiled noir. But it's the clean, classic-with-a-twist (and Eisner-award-winning) art of Michael Avon Oeming that makes the stories and characters pop off the page. And this weekend Oeming is just one of over a hundred comic-industry veterans who'll be attending the FallCon comic convention, a Twin Cities institution of 19 years that's still going strong. The two-day event brings together dealers, writers, artists, and fans in a massive gathering—plus a host of other entertainment and extras such as grab bags for early attendees, a charity comic art raffle, and a group specializing in Star Wars cosplay (intricate costumes designed after geek icons) called "the 501st Legion Vader's Fist." $10. 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information call 651.645.0386 or visit www.MNCBA.com.
