As the president seemed to finally notice last week, the current Middle Eastern mess has a lot in common with Vietnam. Luckily, the art in "War Mediated" suggests that we've progressed in areas other than weaponry and communications. Eschewing both ham-fisted polemic and line drawings of doves, Megan Vossler, Justin Newhall, and Camille Gage deploy nuanced reflection and drop-dead realist technique in the service of paintings that relentlessly explore combat's consequences. Similarly, the other half of the MIA's carnival of conflict, "I Will Follow You into the Dark," finds painter Megan Rye working from the 2,000-plus photos her U.S. Marine brother took during his tour of duty in Iraq. Unlike pretty much everybody else in the world, none of the artists offer pat conclusions, instead hewing to imagery that'll make you think...and keep thinking.
