Those moments make you wonder what Marshall Mathers would have been like if Eminem had cut back on the Christina Aguilera jokes and the homophobia. Had Eminem grown up just a little between records--not enough to stop offending, just enough to pick his battles--Marshall Mathers could have been the next Ready to Die. By turns hilarious, outrageous, and pathetic, Eminem may be the first rapper since Biggie so adept at verbally exploring every angle of his personal anger and abandonment.

Between the fame, legal trouble with wifey, and a defamation suit lodged by his own moms, there's no shortage of distractions to prevent the MC from honing his craft and his attitude in time for the next record. But Eminem might just be contrary enough, determined enough, pissed off enough to make this transformation a possibility. Here's hoping he has enough hate inside for all of us.
