Minnesota School Boards Association Passes Resolutions for 1999

The Delegate Assembly of the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) recently voted on resolutions proposed by school boards and members statewide. The resolutions passed will be added to MSBA's legislative policies and advocated for the 1999 legislative session and beyond.

This year members passed twelve resolutions, some of them include:

Allowing school districts to levy for hazardous busing costs

Requesting additional money for capital expenditures

Supporting the allocation of money for tobacco prevention and education programs

Allowing districts to send open-enrollment students with truancy problems back to their home districts

Requesting school-district immunity from Y2K

Establishing a state insurance fund for exceptional costs associated with the Y2K bug

Resolutions that did not pass include:

Efforts to support, delay, or repeal the Profile of Learning program

Reinstating the State Board of Education as it now exists or with proposed changes

The purpose of the Minnesota State School Board Association is to assist elected school board members in meeting their fundamental governance roles--vision, structure, accountability, and advocacy--in order to achieve excellence and equity in public education through representative government.
