Ajax scours the body politic in search of a conscience; The Chairs discovers the seat of all meaninglessness
At last, with the host seated, the Orator (Michael Robertson) arrives to deliver the old man's message. The Orator is a silent specter, dressed like the serial killer from Scream. In a final cruel irony, the message is gibberish and pantomime. Ionesco's bleak vision of the human comedy nullifies the very possibility of meaningful communication. So why are we laughing?
