The Last Days of Frankie the Fly

Director Peter Markle made local history 15 years ago with The Personals, the first genuine made-in-Minnesota movie. Since then, he's been a journeyman filmmaker in Hollywood, mixing feature assignments (Youngblood, Wagons East) with good work on TV (e.g. EZ Streets on CBS). This big-screen outing stars Dennis Hopper as a low-level gangster trying to do something right and vindictive; he's mixed up with a gangster boss (Michael Madsen), a junkie/porn actress (Darryl Hannah), and a film artiste/gambler (Kiefer Sutherland) in a plot that screams Get Shorty and Reservoir Dogs but wants mainly to be whimsical. The results are muddled, but Hopper does decently with a genuinely new sort of character for him. Markle will introduce Frankie the Fly at Suburban World; a champagne reception at New French Kitchen follows the screening. Suburban World, Friday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m.
