For some smaller festive action in the other downtown, the Fine Line hosts its second ThingamaGIG outdoor/indoor showcase on Friday and Saturday. Friday's lineup, starting at 6 p.m., includes Dixie & The Cannibals, Sacred Chao, Crown Victorias, Liquid Ernies, Fitzmen, rainTribe, and Peal. On Saturday at 7 p.m., it's Sea Biscuits, Big Sky, Bone Shakers, Fire Under Water, and The Wonsers. The first two bands each night will play in the Fine Line alley. $5/night. 318 First Ave. N., Mpls.; 338-8100.

Cheapo in Uptown and the TRG label have paired up to bring us a Friday night in-store series, the subtly dubbed Supersonic Indie Power Hour. This Friday at 6 p.m., Vinnie and the Stardusters will play a belated Independence Day set--though it's rumored the Dusters plan to rally for the U.S. to rejoin the British Empire. Whatever. Coming soon to Cheapo: The Honeydogs (July 12); Like Hell (July 19); Colfax Abbey (July 26); Dylan Hicks (Aug. 2); and more. Free. Cheapo, 2919 Hennepin Ave., Mpls.; 827-8238.

And finally, Walker Art Center's Summer Movies and Music Series (the grandpappy of 'em all) is back in Loring Park, and it's one of the best rites of summer this city has to offer. It kicks off this Monday with Milk with Rebel Without A Cause (July 8); Flatstor with Visit to a Small Planet (July 15); Hmong rappers STX with The Subterraneans (July 22); The Strawdogs and A Bucket of Blood (July 29); Eddie Berger and the Jazz All-Stars with Too Late Blues (Aug. 5); and Phull Surkle/Casino Royale with Beat Girl (Aug 12). Don't forget the bug spray, and pray for no rain. Music at 7 p.m.; movie at sundown. 375-7577. (Groebner)
