WINTER CAMPING

STATE

MINNESOTA STATE PARKS 296-4776, (800) 652-9747: Open all year round. Most state parks have some sites plowed out. No showers or flush toilets in winter. Running water available. Plenty of cross-country ski trails. State sticker required, camping fee. Call about individual parks. The following are a sampling:

AFTON STATE PARK 436-5391: Ski or backpack into 24 campsites.

TETTEGOUCHE (218) 226-3539: Five to six sites plowed all winter.

TEMPERANCE RIVER (218) 663-7476: Five or more sites plowed all winter.

METRO AREA

HENNEPIN PARKS 559-6700: Winter group camping, primitive, available in secluded areas of many parks. Some sites can accommodate tents, trailers, RVs. Special sites for horseback riders, and hikers. Call for reservations and user fee. A sampling listed below:

BAKER PARK RESERVE Half Moon site, road plowed, shelter available with stove. Water available, no electricity.

CROW-HASSAN PARK RESERVE Blue Stem site, water available, exclusive use of shelter 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., ski or walk in over one mile.

ELM CREEK PARK RESERVE Rush Creek site, road plowed and water available.

CARVER PARK RESERVE Lake Zumbra site, plowed access. Three sites and shelter available. No electricity or water.

CLEARY LAKE REGIONAL PARK RESERVE Oak Grove site, plowed access. No water or electricity. Available by reservation only.

WISCONSIN

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES PARKS AND RECREATION (608) 266-2181 Winter camping available at 20 parks. All have pit toilets and water. Many campgrounds have
electrical hookups. Plenty of cross-country skiing trails. Call for information about individual parks. Park sticker required
and camping fee. The following is a sampling of some of the closest sites to the Metro area.

ALPINE SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING

AFTON ALPS Hastings, 436-5245: 18 chairs, 37 runs, vertical drop of 350 feet, longest run is 3,000 feet. Open 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily, Adults $24 weekends/$19 weekdays, Juniors $21 weekends/$16 weekdays, Children under 12 $18 weekends/$13 weekdays. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding.

ANDES TOWER HILLS Alexandria,
1-965-2455: 3 chairs, 14 runs (in addition to cross country runs). 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. weekends, 1-9 p.m. Wednesday- Friday. Adults $20 weekends/$15 weekdays. Children under 11 $15 weekends/$12 weekdays. Big Foot (short ski) - $12. Ski rental, snowboarding.

BUCK HILL Burnsville, 435-7174: 4 chairs, 12 runs, vertical drop of 306 feet, longest run is 2,500 feet. Open 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends. $16 weekdays, $23 weekends, children 11 and under $18. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding. Call for short session skiing rates.

CHRISTIE MOUNTAIN Bruce, Wis., (715) 868-7800: 1 chair, 12 runs, vertical drop of 350 feet, longest run is 4,000 feet. Open weekends and daily; night skiing Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Ski rental, ski school.

COFFEE MILL SKI AREA Wabasha, 1-565-2777: 2 chairs, 10 runs, vertical drop of 420 feet, longest run is 4,500 feet. 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Sunday, 3-9:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday. $21 weekends/$12 weekdays. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding.

GIANTS RIDGE Biwabik, (800) 688-SNOW: 4 chairs, 24 runs, vertical drop of 500 feet, longest run is 3,800 feet. Open Monday - Tuesday 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Wednesday - Sunday 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., $32 weekends/$26 weekdays. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding.

LUTSEN MOUNTAINS, Lutsen, 218-663-7281: 6 chairs, 48 runs over 1,300 acres, vertical drop of 1,008 feet; swimming pool, sauna, whirl pool, fitness center, and condos. Open 9:30-4 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 9-4 p.m. Sat-Sun. $35 13 and over; $25 12 and under; 5 and under free.

MOUNT FRONTENAC Frontenac, 1-388-5826: 3 chairs, 10 runs, vertical drop of 420 feet, longest run is 5,000 ft. Open 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Sunday, 4:30 p.m.- 10 p.m. Wednesday- Friday. Adults $21 weekends and holidays/$13 evenings, Juniors $19 weekends and holidays/$13 evenings, Children $16 weekends and holidays/$10 evenings, Seniors $10.50 weekends and holidays/$6.50 evenings. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding. Holidays open 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

MOUNT KATO Mankato, (507) 625-3363: 8 chairs, 17 runs, vertical drop of 240 feet, longest run is 2,800 feet. Open 9:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, $22 weekends/$17 weekdays. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding.

MOUNT LA CROSSE La Crosse, Wis., (800)426-3665: 3 chairs, rope tow, 17 runs, vertical drop of 516 feet, longest run is 5,300 feet. Open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. weekends/holidays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays. $28 weekends/$24 weekdays/$18 night skiing, $10 Thursday night. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding.

POWDER RIDGE Kimball, 1-398-7200: 3 chairs, 14 runs, vertical drop of 295 feet, longest run is 2,600 feet. 9 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. weekdays (4 p.m.- 10 p.m. Tuesday). $21 weekends/$13 weekdays. Ski rental, ski school, snowboarding.
