ROOTS ROUNDUP: Sherwin Linton will also back Johnny Cash and the Carter Family Saturday at Medina Ballroom (call 478-6661 for ticket info).... After the Flame Cafe Day, stop by Lee's Liquor Lounge for a special engagement by Sleepy LaBeefand the Vibro Champs. It's the first of perhaps many appearances by national country rock legends at Lee's....This hot week of rockabilly kicks off tonight with a return appearance by Stray Cats bassist Lee Rocker at the 7th Street Entry.... The 400 Bar is rockin' it old-school all weekend: Friday it's Strawdogs with the raw rockin' blues of Mr. Midnight and the Spooky Paradise Kings of Love. Saturday, Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs open for the Honeydogs.
REAL ROCK & RADIO: I know the local rockabilly rabble have been trying to nudge REV-105 into a roots & rock specialty show. They oughta know that the like-minded Radio Rumpus Room on KFAI (90.3 FM) has a new and improved time slot at 9 p.m. Friday. It's all part of Fresh Air's Friday night show shuffle: Mark Wheat's awesome Local Sound Department is now heard at 7:30, and Barbara "Babs" Economon, an ex-Homemaker from Heck, has returned to the air with Friday Night Poker Party, shuffling all manner of weird arty-pop in her own cool style. Lost in the deal were Drew, Jon, Patti, and Chris, a.k.a the Noise Factor Foursome. Thanks for all your years of loyal subversiveness.
FRIDAY REGGAE PARTY: For "roots rock" of a whole other dimension, Friday night rules. Black Uhuru returns to First Avenue for an early show (doors 6 p.m., $10 advance). Later that night, the locally based International Reggae All Stars jam down at Cabooze. Somewhere in between--both chronologically and geographically--Eight Head takes the stage at Cedar Cultural Centre. 8 p.m.
DRONES AND DRUMS: If you like experimental semi-industrial clatter, you should just move to 7th Street Entry this weekend. Friday night it's Einsturzende Neubauten drummer FM Einheit jamming with spooky guitarist Caspar Brotzmann. Sounds like a perfect soundtrack for Friday the 13th (8 p.m., $8). Saturday and Sunday it's Savage Aural Hotbed, with special guests DaDa Legion opening both nights. Own plays the middle set Saturday, Love Nut squeezes in on Sunday's all-ager.... Own, who just completed a CD, also plays two other gigs this week: at Red Sea Thursday with 12 Rods, and Sunday at the Loring Bar.
